“METROPOLIS AT NIGHT, IT SHIMMERS, YOU KNOW? IT SORT OF TWINKLES. BUT GOTHAM SHINES AT NIGHT. EVERYWHERE THERE’S SOME SHADE OF LIGHT COMING AT YOU. WHITE LIGHT SWEEPING PAST FROM A P.D. BLIMP. BLUE LIGHT SPINNING AT YOU FROM THE LIMELIGHT, ‘3 LEVELS OF DANCING!’. GREEN LIGHT BLINKING FROM THE OFF-TRACK HUB. DRINK, EAT, SLEEP. ORANGE LIGHT, RED LIGHT…AND ALWAYS IN THE BACKGROUND, SOME SMALL YELLOW LIGHT BLINKING CAUTION.”
It begins with an honest man doing honest work but killing hundreds in the process, the work of a single bullet setting off a chain reaction of events Gotham and its dark crusader might never recover from…or live through.
Gangsters shed the blood of innocents regardless of class, age, gender, or profession as crime lords brought forth upon the rising tides sow discord and death in spades, each eager for a claim to a territory not theirs. With an invisible hand reigning in the G.C.P.D. and essentially cutting the cuffs on any thugs brought in by the Batman, there’s a terror on the loose with its reach both far and wide – and stained in crimson.
Gotham City wakes in a blaze of hellfire and war, the tail feathers of a Romanesque figure outlined in deceit and corruption. With each stroke of his conceited brush, the mysterious individual watches as a plan long in the making comes to its awful fruition.
There are too many uncertainties, players, schemers, plots, and ploys that enter the playfield – and this causes a dream to spark and ignite in its furious determination because now that all the pieces of the puzzle have come together, there can finally be one certainty that will shatter the last hold on safety the people of Gotham might hold to.
It has begun: Gotham City declares war on the Batman.
With Damian Wayne’s death still thick in the air, there won’t be time for emotional scars to heal because whatever came to take Gotham back from the Bat will strike with a deadly accuracy at the slightest sign of weakness.
The stakes have never been this high before and might never be again…unless Bruce Wayne can master his demons. The Bat won’t only be fending his personal obstacles, he’ll have to do it with every advantage turned against him and every corner hides someone with a blade too eager to use it. With conflict on the streets and unavoidable tension among the members of the Bat-family, the next series of events will test the limits of not only Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. The Batman, but his closest associates; Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Robin, Batwing, Batwoman, and the Red Hood.
As Gotham City is plagued by turmoil and the Penguin, Professor Pyg, Catwoman, and the usual suspects wage their war for control, unnatural things are stirring in Arkham Asylum and no one is left safe or sane.
Written by an excellent team of writers (Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, John Layman, Ray Fawkes, and Time Seeley), Batman Eternal is a riot of adventure, noir crime-styled suspense, and die-hard explosions rendered in beautiful colours and pencils by an arsenal of talented artists (Jason Fabok, Dustin Nguyen, Andy Clarke, and others). This is an arc that really reinvigorates the Batman mythos as well as reimagines some of the characters, displaying them in a more gritty reality as they face threats unique to their personalities as well as play to their traits, highlighting some of the leading characters like Red Robin in a better light for the reader to really see how they solve crime without the Bat looking over their shoulders. Batman Eternal also delves further into the relationships Batgirl and Red Hood have with each other and the unique dynamic each individual brings to the Bat-family – including Alfred who hides something of an awesome spoiler!
